10 Christmas markets in Essex to kick-start the festive season

As temperatures drop and the nights get longer, it won’t be long before the Christmas decorations go up and everyone gets ready for the festivities.

If you can’t wait for some festive cheer, you could head towards one of the many Christmas fairs and markets being held across Essex, and get into the seasonal mood while browsing for gift ideas. Read on to discover 10 wonderful markets and local events.

1. Leigh Pop Up Christmas market

This two-day event takes place on the weekend of Saturday 4 December and Sunday 5 December at Leigh Community Centre. Organisers promise an event filled with superb designers, potters, painters, photographers and much more, all providing inspiration for gift ideas or decorations.

2. Essex Christmas Wonderland, Southend-on-Sea

Dubbed as a Christmas spectacular for all the family, the event opens on Friday 10 December and continues until Friday 24 December. The festive attraction, taking place in Garon Park in Southend, promises something for everyone, with fairground rides, street food, a giant wheel, Christmas market and more. The wonderland opens from 12pm until 11pm every day.

3. Christmas Farmers’ and Craft Market, Southern Maltings

Want to stock up with delicious food and tasty treats for the festivities? If so, this could be the ideal destination for you. The market will have local artisan food and gifts for Christmas, as well as mulled wine to help get you into the festive spirit. The event will be held at the market at Southern Maltings, on Sunday 5 December between 10am and 3pm.

4. Vegan Christmas Market, Westcliff-on-Sea

For those looking for plant-based treats as well as cruelty-free and environmentally friendly gift ideas, this festive market could be what you’re looking for. The festivities take place on Sunday 12 December at the Lamb & Lion, and visitors will be able to buy vegan food and beer, cruelty-free cosmetics and eco-friendly clothing. Doors open from 10am until 5pm.

5. Christmas Market, Grays

If you want inspiration for gift ideas, organisers say this market is the one for you. The event takes place on Thursday 16 December at the Civic Hall, and will offer treats, crafts, gifts and much more. Doors open at 12pm and it runs until 8pm.

6. Brightlingsea Late Night Shopping and Christmas Market

On Friday 3 December, this coastal town will host a mini Christmas Market from 2pm to 6.30pm, which will run alongside the town’s traditional late night shopping evening. With a wide range of gift ideas from a variety of shops and stalls, there is likely to be something for every taste. Most shops will remain open until 8pm.

7. Epping Christmas Market

This traditional festive market will have stalls offering food, gifts and crafts, providing plenty of gift ideas for family and friends. There will also be entertainment and a Santa for younger members of the family during the event, which takes place in the town centre between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 4 December.

8. Sutton Hall Railway Christmas Market, Rochford

With a festive market, craft fair, food stalls and the ability to ride on a steam locomotive, this Christmas event promises to be a wonderful day out. The market is being held on Sunday 12 December between 10.30am and 3.30pm. Train rides will be between 11am and 3pm.

9. Christmas Market, Prettyfields Vineyard, Colchester

There can’t be many better places to enjoy some festive cheer than a vineyard. Organisers of the market promise a variety of stylish and delicious gifts from talented local craftspeople. There will also be mulled wine and mince pies, coffee and cake available at the market, which takes place on Saturday 4 December between 2pm and 8pm.

10. German Market & Christmas Fair, Wickford

With more than 30 stalls offering a variety of crafted Yuletide gifts from candles to handmade woollen hats, there should be something for everyone. If you’re a beer fan you could also enjoy some authentic German brews to get you in the festive mood. The fair runs until Thursday 23 December at Meadow Croft Garden Centre.
