Meet the team: A Q&A with Chartered Financial Planner Trey

By HarperLees

In this month’s Q&A, we hope you’ll enjoy getting to know Trey, who is one of our Chartered Financial Planners.

Read on to learn more about Trey’s background, how he helps our clients to achieve their long-term goals, and some of the things Trey enjoys doing outside of work.

1. What is your role at HarperLees and how do you help your clients?

I am one of the financial planners at the firm. I work closely with our clients, providing them with support and guidance to help them achieve their goals. This includes encouraging clients to reflect on what they would like life to look like and helping them to make this a reality.

2. What did you do before working at HarperLees?

I have worked in the financial services sector for over 10 years, initially as part of a global third-party administration firm before training to become a financial planner for a regional IFA firm. Prior to this, I worked in various sectors from hospitality to telesales. Fortunately, there is little risk of me dropping food or drink on anyone in my current role…

3. What is your favourite part of your role at HarperLees?

I enjoy getting to know new and existing clients and hearing more about their life experiences. The most rewarding part of the role is helping clients make significant decisions that are important to them. This could be retiring earlier, helping their children to buy a home, or finally getting around to that once-in-a-lifetime trip.

4. What do you believe sets HarperLees apart from other financial planning firms?

The time that we invest to get to know our clients and their aspirations, and the fact that we are always focused on the best outcome for them. This means that our work isn’t solely focused on recommending financial products.

5. What is a common misconception you hear from clients about financial planning?

That the value of financial advice is measured by the performance of the investment the planner is managing. Investment returns play a small part in relation to the whole picture and are predominantly driven by the stock market, which is impossible to consistently predict. The real value of financial planning is usually more difficult to quantify as the positive outcomes we help clients achieve are often intangible and personal to them.

6. What are your favourite hobbies or pastimes when you’re not at work?

The vast majority of my time is spent with my wife and 16-month-old at the moment. When I’m not chasing a destructive toddler around, I enjoy watching live music, particularly up-and-coming bands in small venues.

7. What would your dream meal be?

Bottomless pizza (there is a great place in Chelmsford called Moto Pizza, which I love!).

8. What’s a goal that you’re working towards at the moment, personally or professionally?

Professionally, I achieved my Chartered Accreditation at the end of last year so the final step is to work towards becoming a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.

Personally, trying to do a good job raising my son every day.

The value of your investments (and any income from them) can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Investments should be considered over the longer term and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.
